The term "virtual" is sort of misleading; virtual particles are in fact every bit as real as other particles. They are called "virtual" because their existence cannot be seen in particle accelerators. We know that they actually exist, though, from indirect evidence such as the Lamb Shift in the light spectrum of hydrogen
