Just how long is this going to take?
Mr. Carrot Started conversation Nov 20, 2003
Hi, I made an entry in July, called The Village of Holmsbu, Norway (A1126766). It was picked for editing some three months ago, but I haven't heard nothing, and so far as I can see, nothing has happened... What's going on with it? I've consulted the page on the edited guide process, but it says there that it should take no more than two months... Is there anyone who could tell me anything about why my entry has been delayed like this?
I don't mean to be nagging you like this, but I'm just wondering what's going on...
Thanks

I don't know why it's taking so long. I've an entry which is in a similar state (recommended 13th August). The recommended version of your entry is at A1149220. The assigned sub-editor is Fashion Cat U137089 who hasn't posted on h2g2 in over four weeks.

I'll look into this today. Although some entries have been delayed due to the backlog caused by the in-house team's two week's offside and subsequent reduction in numbers, this entry was allocated before that period, so I'll chase this up.
Apologies for the delay,
Jimster

If you look at the ComingUp list, the first two in the 'with a scout' list were recommended on 27 June. So that's five months! It makes the three months that my entry has been with the sub-editor seem insignificant.

The dates on that page are a little misleading as they just list the date that the editing copy was created, not necessarily when it reached a sub-editor. However, with this one, it was sitting with a sub-editor who has been off-site for a considerable amount of time, so we've recalled it and will try to get it back through the editorial process as quickly as possible. Apologies again for the delay,
Jimster

Jimster, I know you are very busy. In general, how long should be leave it before we begin to think something has gone wrong?

For the moment, I'd suggest three months as there's the point at which the entry is selected, the queue for a sub-editor, the four weeks we allow for sub-editing and the queue for the Front Page all to take in. If any of these queues gets too long, we may up the Front Page entry quota for a while or if, as in this case, an entry gets 'mislaid', we can bring it forward a bit to help it get back to where it should have been.
As this process largely relied on volunteers, no-one wants to get too heavy handed about it, but there will be occasions where we give our subs (who are generally superb!) a bit of a nudge to remind them. Postings to this forum are a good way of keeping check on your entries, or indeed, by looking at the 'Coming Up' page.

Can you not roust up the stats and squeeze Auntie for more staff in Bush House.
Indeed why not do a geographical Houdini...up here at BBC Newcastle there is plenty of talent. Devolution is fashionable and the cost of living is cheaper.
Just a thought...doffed cap etc..!
