It's a bug. It's not supposed to have a purpose.
I think if you unsubscribe and re-subscribe it fixes it for that thread

In that case, I've misunderstood the problem.
Do you only see it on Askh2g2?
Are the duplicates there all the time?
Can you provide a URL link to a page of Askh2g2 threads containing duplicates, as you see it?
Any Gurus reading this?

The only doubly-appearing thread that I have been aware of is the one entitled 'What to Do?' I think this occurred during a testing phase, and if you are subscribed to it and would only like to see it once 
rather than the quaintly double echo, do as Icy suggests.
If you're seeing any others, please would you report them here? A87753135 (so that they can be logged)

The duplicates appear in My Conversations on My Space.

Ah, but see post 2 above. You're subscribed to that one. Unsubscribe, then resubscribe, and see if that fixes it

Yes, do try what Icy suggests. I know that there were a few 'doubles' of conversations caused by a glitch when we were testing the new h2g2 system before moving away from the BBC. Sorry for the inconvenience.

The duplicate subscriptions problem predates the NPL move, though. It's probably nothing more serious than a database corruption

I've tried unsubscribing from Ask but that didn't work and the duplicated threads I see I am NOT subscribed to so I can't see how unsubscribing would help.

If you click on the X in your conversations list the threads will go away from your account. However, unsubbing from 'Ask' will only stop you seeing the new threads created not the ongoing threads which are currently active

Hi Incog. If they appear on your personal space, then you are subscribed to them. Open one of the duplicated threads, then click the link which unsubscribes you from it (I use Alabaster - the link's at the bottom of the page). Both duplicates will subsequently disappear from your PS.
To resubscribe, search for it in Ask, open it and resubscribe. Alternatively, use your browser's back button and resubscribe. You should now see only one version on your personal space
This may seem convoluted, but we're describing a workaround. This is still a bug which needs to be fixed one day.
