has anyone heard of the whimsy cakes? they are very popular for those "cool, in and hip" weddings. the cake is still three tiered, but it lists at odd angles and the proportions are not quite right. it comes off as an all over cartoony effect, which you either love of hate. i'm not sure if a certain company or person makes them, but they're really cool anyway.

I love those cakes, too.
They are made out of fondant. The fondant is rolled out with a rolling pin and draped over the cake. It is kinda tough, and you can stack the cakes easily without tearing the look.
I wanted a cake like this, because I hate the traditional washed-out, boring, not good, vanilla cakes. But, my caterer said the icing is dificult to do (i.e. expensive), and it doesn't taste very good anyway. I tried a sample, and it wasn't all that bad.
So, I opted for the very untraditional (for here, anyway).
I am having a three-tier chocolate cake. It will have chocolate fudge poured on top of the icing, and chocolate dipped strawberries on top of the fudge. In between each layer will have strawberry filling.
I'm sure it will be a crowd pleaser!
Also, I opted not to keep the 1st layer for our first anniversary. Not only will it save money, but everyone says it never tasts good, anyway.
The grooms cake is going to be the boring, white cake if anybody really wants that sort of thing!

In England the traditional cake is a rich fruit cake, quite often these days with a sponge top layer.
If you are going to stick to other English traditions such as sending a slice of cake to each guest who couldn't make it, or keeping a tier to use as your first baby's christening cake, you need a cake that will last for years.
