i personally go with Syd any day of the week, i think he is the true vision of english psycadelia and if he had just held his head together could have went on to become one of the greatest songwriters this country has ever produced.

Waters refined what Barrett gave, primarily the use of the chromatic scale and turned the band into a direction that parallels music with Method acting. I type 'method acting' because it is like Pink Floyd is saying "I am jazz" during Money or "I am country" during Breathe.
(or "I am reggae" during Learning to Fly which is where Gilmour carried on the tradition of assuming a form.)
Barrett's work was all-out psychedelia which Waters made more sublime, quite possibly due to his close friend's handicap.
