Hi Consistently, Dyfed is the county, that Borth is in. It's proper name was Ceredigion (KereDIGion), but there was a re-organisation some years ago. Aberystwyth is pronounced Aber, as you would in German, IST, as German, with (the th as in the, not as in with). Borth is pronounced as it is spelt and Ynyslas as InISlas, the a as in cat. In Welsh the accent is on the penultimate syllable mostly. Hope this helps.

From your name, I take it you could be German? I'm sorry but I don't know enough about your language to give you any better help, perhaps there is another Researcher who speaks both Welsh and German who could be of more help.

Hanging her head in shame.

Granny, it may help to include that info in the article. Possibly under the heading Pronunciation Tips.

Ausnahmsweise, wie üblich (Consistently inconsistent)

Hi,

actually - I am English. And I once tried to learn some Welsh. (Those mutations - where you change the first letter of a noun - like cadair and y gadair - ughh). I've been away from the UK for over 20 years, so I didn't know the new county names. (My own, Rutland dissapeared and re-appeared.)

It was the Dyfed I was having problems with - something like DIV-ETH?

I know that f and v are interchangeable (avon and afon and Trevor and Trefor)

Also, I was suggesting that you actually include that info (that it's the county) and the phonetic pronunciation in your guide article.

Awu.

Aahh, Rutland, home of the Ruttles & the Water. I remember it well.

Mutations are quite easy when you are actually speaking, they've evolved from spoken Welsh, and Cardies would say DIV etd. it's another mutation!!! But I gather that could be contentious. I've not lived in Wales since I was a baby, but used to speak it.

I take your point, thanks. I'll add it.

Thanks Loonytunes, I guess I didn't explain myself properly (blame it on my age smiley - smiley). I meant would the link appear on the right, but having been there and done that I see that it has.

I also tried to link to another BBC site where there's a nice piece on Red Kites but that didn't work so I took it out again!

Thanks for your patience & help. smiley - ale

Granny, congratulations. Your opus has been recommended for acceptance in the edited guide. It will now be sent to the sub editors for a bit of final polishing. Eventually it will star on the front page at which time you will be sent an email informing you of the happy event.

For your info, (and it's a bit of fun) here's what Sam, one of the h2g2 editors, had to say about the article when accepting it.

Ahhhh... Borth! I used to go on holiday there when I was wee lad with my mum and dad and my brother! We used to stay in a friend's caravan on one of the sites mentioned in the entry and my father used to teach me how to play golf on the links course. Ahhhh... what memories. smiley - smiley Actually, my dad did a good job because my real name's Tiger Woods and I work here at h2g2 in between matches to let off a bit of steam - Sam's only my moniker - I love the anonymity...

Right, the entry's a bit short which is a shame. However, I see in the
threads that it used to be even shorter and that the author has added some extra info, so, I guess it can go in. Nice pick; please close off the thread. smiley - smiley

Acheron said There is a war memorial to a crashed fighter plane if I remember righly.

The memorial is for a pilot that crash his aircraft in a field in upper borth, the aircraft was a hawk trainer flying out of RAF valley. The aircraft had a inflight accident that made unflyable. The story is that he battled with the aircraft to stop it crashing onto the people in the borth area, and gave his life so the civilans in the area could be saved having a aircraft crashing on the village.

There is also a memoral to the men of borth area that gave there lives in the second world war.

I hope this help your memories of borth.

Very true, the monument, for anyone interested is on top of the cliff at Upper Borth, the south side of the village. There is also a plaque on the Tourist Information Board placed there by Uppingham School, Rutland. The school has an annual Borth Service which commemorates the village offering a haven to the school during two epidemics.
