h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

We got up too early this morning. We'd booked the re-run of the boxing, perhaps not a wise move after going out & drinking last night but we dragged ourselves out of bed, brewed up & watched Danny Williams being taken apart .

Whilst waiting for the Ricky Hatton fight, I wandered into the kitchen to make porridge & more . I realised that the little man with the hammer wasn't all in my head as I'd supposed, but was coming from the garden.

Cautiously raising the window blind a few inches, I could see movement on the horse chestnut tree. A Lesser Spotted Woodpecker was busy enlarging the hole in the box .

Throughout the day we've watched it busily making a nest!!! In December!!! Hope it doesn't start breeding .

Looks like I'll have to double the amount of mealworms next time I go to the shop.

Although the site says that it's rare in Lancashire, this isn't the first we've seen around here, and it's the second time we've seen one in our garden. If we hadn't cleared the box out a couple of weeks ago I'd have thought it might have been after insects in the old nest.

The box was made for Grandad by our eldest grandaughter so we'll have to ask her to make another one for the blue tits . This time we'll reinforce the opening
