Tribute to John Peel

Post 1

Sho - employed again!

I watched the tribute to John Peel on BBC2 last night.
It made me smiley - cry

I can't believe that I won't be tuning in (sporadically as it has been of late) to his programme. And Saturday mornings won't be nearly as much gentle fun and interest as they have been. Home Truths just won't be the same.

John Peel played a load of rubbish (IMO) a lot of the time, but when he picked a gem it was a shining Koh-i-noor of smiley - magic. He got me through the sixth form relatively sane, and he got me through some horribly cold guard duties and night duties on exercise.

I'll really miss him.

Dark Side of the Goon

John Peel is responsible for crafting my taste in music by playing a lot of stuff I didn't like. When everyone else was listening to John Peel, I discovered that I didn't like his playlist at all and went off to listen to Tommy Vance instead.

Years later, of course, I discovered that things had moved on and Peel was playing some really interesting music. Turns out that you listened to John Peel not to hear what was currently popular, but to hear what would become popular in about two months.

I heard an awful lot of stuff on his show that I subsequently never heard anywhere else and, thanks to him, have a number of very fine musical recordings.

He'll be missed.

Sho - employed again!

Ah, Tommy Vance, voice to die for. Face like Gollum.
Truly a face for radio.

I listened to both, because each was only on once a week when I was at home in germany (on good ol' BFBS) during term time, however, my evenings went like this: Peter Powell, Kid Jensen, Annie Nightingale (who I didn't recognise in the tribute show until my hubs pointed her out) and then John Peel.

smiley - cry still very sad.
