A friend of mine from New Zealand posted me a link to a sad article about the Kakapo parrot.

It seems that a mystery bug has killed some females - which is not fun when you consider that there are less than 100 left. After it seemed to be going so well for them. Comparatively.
I like the way the article describes them as "the world's biggest parrots, weighing up to four kilograms. They are ground-dwellers, nocturnal and solitary."
Now it could just be me, but didn't Douglas Adams put it far more succinctly with "the world's fattest and least able to fly parrot"?

The Kakapo is my favourite parrot and it's good to see improved news on them.
I was worried. I still am. There aren't enough of them.
I too met the Kakapo through "Last Chance to See", which was possibly the best thing that Douglas wrote.

Poor birdies.
It's a pity the huge flocks of green parrots around Esher can't be discovered by a natural predator. It is only a mtter of time before they cross the M25 and are flapping around here
