Okay, so I've had two goes at creating journal entries via WAP, neither of which I would call a resounding success. I thought it was about time I put together a more complete entry.
Is WAP a great white elephant? I don't think so, but I don't think it is yet being used for the right things. Text entry is definitely not a good idea. The currently running BT Cellnet tv ad of a girl doing her email on a 7110 is a joke. It's hard enough trying to use a Palm with a WAP browser let alone a phone. You might just manage with a Nokia Communicator or a WAP enabled Psion (or other keyboarded device) but not much else. Check your email by all means, but forget about replying. Same thing realy applies to discussion groups as well.
Where WAP is going to win is with geographically relevant data, restaurant listing based on where you are, that kind of stuff or useful, concise, information. The guide has great potential but 3000 word entries on a mobile phone screen, even the nice one on the 7110, have potential to be painful. Two or three screens is probably the upper limit (at least that's mine anyway).
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big believer in this stuff and want it to succeed. I can see great potential when technologies like Bluetooth start to take hold and when higher capacity mobile bandwith becomes more common.
It's going to be an interesting journey and I for one, am ready for the trip.
Neil.
