Me likes it... ~grin~... didn't know a lot about PNG... and now me thinks me understands it better... There are hardly any refrences to this subject on h2g2 and me thinks it is well worth you submitting it... but be warned it can take several WEEKS for a submitted entry to be looked at by a Sub Editor... me thinks it's about 16-17 weeks at the moment... so you will have a long wait... ~sad smile~
But do go for it... it's well written, and just what the guide needs.....
Respects,
Greebo T.

Thank you. I appreciate it and I don't mind the wait. To tell the truth, I just took it from a paper I wrote last year in Geography. I've been there, and it is a wonderful country, but nothing came up on the search I did. I did submit it. Thank you for reading it and giving it your feedback!

There must be a wealth of tales to be told of life in West Texas. How far off the mark is the 'King of the Hill' stereotype? The most interesting stuff I've come across in the Guide thusfar has been entries based on personal observations of home, wherever that happens to be.

Well, I don't watch King of the Hill, and I lived in California most of my life. It's only been the last three years that I've been here. But thank you for the suggestions. I will probably use them!

This line here:
"A traveler in PNG, having done a basic study on the cultures and taboos prevalent in PNG..."
Might I ask what the cultures and taboos are?
Great page btw. It seems that there is precious little coverage on PNG in the guide. I hope this gets accepted

There are many having to do with the role of women--
1) they should always wear at least knee length skirts
2) they should not step over food or children (makes what they stepped over "unclean" and is at the very least disrespectful)
3) they should not go somewhere alone
Travelers in general--
1) do not ask someone's name. the natives usually do not use them, although in bigger towns it is getting more acceptable.
2) do not show mixed-gender affection in public. men can hold hands, or women can hold hands, and it is a sign of friendship. but husbands and wives, etc. should not.
3) avoid eye contact with strangers. it is considered asking for trouble.
A traveler also needs to be aware of how to travel in PNG and how to avoid trouble. There is too much info about that to tell you now- the best thing is to hook up with a native you trust.
Most of the things I have listed above are important if the traveler wants to respect the culture. PNGians will understand if a visitor does not follow these guidelines, but I think it is important to fit in as best as you can.
I hope this has been helpful. Do you have any other questions?
Thank you for the input!

I think that makes it pretty comprehensive. Thank you for that. I am sure it will pay off in a few weeks time. Thanks
Any other questions, I'll be right back

Good article, though you might want to add the culture and taboos into the article itself, so the sub-ed won't miss it Oh and possibly mention cannabilism and head hunting, it is Papua New Guinea who have this in their past isn't it?, oh and possibly the 'shaking disease' Kuru Or maybe not, it is your article after all now did New Guinea have a Cargo Cult? Hmmm I might go and see if I can find out Until later.....

I might put the culture and taboos in there... and the fact that cannibalism is only in the deep bush now and mostly eradicated. I don't know what the shaking disease is or what the Cargo Cult is. Thank you for the added info. If you find references I can read to get more info, that would be great. The problem is I don't want to do the entire history because that would be a lot of researching and time...

I wrote a reply, halfway through my computer wiped my temporary internet files, I go back to the thread to look at something, come back to the reply screen and everything's gone
What I was saying was...I cannot keep silent any longer...
I am the subeditor who is subbing this article!
Which is why I askewd about the taboos and stuff. I'll go and look at the new info and add that too *^_^*.
I'm marking this down as an ACCEPT, hopefully the PTB will agree with me.
Have I said too much?

It deserves to be accepted. I will be quite disappointed if the PTB don't approve.
Though they probably will, seeing the lack of coverage of PNG in the guide, and that this page rox. But I'm trying not to get hopes -too- high.

I understand totally. But I do appreciate your recommendation. I'm just a little excited because it's my first. Anyway, I'll get on with my life now...
