It's a sad fact of University life that no-one really takes much of an interest in politics. Sure, they get annoyed about tuition fees and stuff like that but only a small handful ever seem to DO anything about it. This year so far I've created one new society affiliated to my Student's Union (at Nottingham), been asked to stand as treasurer for another and I'm also running for Week One Rep in order to be able to help the poor little freshers next year who don't know about beer. The problem with this is that in the first two instances no-one could care less about whether or not I'm president of the Comedy society or treasurer of the Fencing club. However, everyone wants to be a Week One Rep, for obvious reasons - they get to hang out with all the first years and get really drunk every night just like they did in week one last year. And the sad thing is that, because there are reps for every hall, it's more a popularity contest than who can do the best job (i.e. me). But that, of course, is just my opinion.
