The write-up states that
'However, when it moved to the USA, somebody already had a copyright on that name. Hence, it was shortened to Pokémon.'
In the United States, it is a Trademark, not a Copyright, that is used to register a name.
HOWEVER--
A search of the US Patent and Trademark Database [Broken link removed by Moderator]reveals 31 matches for Pokemon, but none for "Pocket Monsters".

Ah, well I wrote that part and I got it from a (probably unreliable) UK Game Boy magazine.
