Unfortunately the marketing or exposure it does get (here in the US anyway) is mostly negative. We've got atheists trying to get the Ten Commandments removed from public building and "under God" removed from the Pledge of Allegiance. They get a great deal of press and piles of vicious and threatening mail and phone calls.

Well, the commandments should not be on public buildings, and the pledge of allegiance is a tired relic of McCarthyism anyway. If people overreact and get violent over what appears to be strictly cosmetic issues, that's their problem.
Says a lot about religion, doesn't it?

I don't really know what it says about religion. I've heard said that if persons feel as American christians do that their religion is so threatened that it needs to be coded in stone or law that it is really a dead religion. I tend to agree, but can't claim it as an original thought.
My point though was more about the direct threats that have been recieved by those who recently have questioned the placement of the 10 Commandments in public places or the pledge to the Christian god included in the pledge. Its only a matter of time here before one of those activist athiests suffers bodily harm by some zealot. I feel conditions in the US are such that athiests who choose to market thier belief would be putting themselves or their families at risk.

My understanding is that the constitution of the US formally separates church and state and therefore prohibits the use of religious symbols or imagery in public institutions. The atheists would therefore appear to be correct on the 10 Commandments and oath of allegiance issues and the Christians, frankly, unamerican and unpatriotic. And don't even get me started on banning Darwin from school libraries...

well i remeber a few years back in school the teachers making you stand up and say every damn word in the pledge. being an atheist i did not and i did serve many detentions for this. under god was placed in the pledge to make us silly americans to think we had "god" on our side in the ww2
