William Faulkner's the Sound and the Fury has beautiful writings on the subject throughout the Quentin section...
"I give you the mausoleum of all hope and desire" is my favourite, but I could dig up a whole lot more (The book's hiding in the case behind me) . Most do pertain to this article, concerning itself with the minute, inperceptible yet noticeable ticks storing, keeping, compiling unfulfilled desires and death and forgotten memories in tiny incremements...
A bit depressing, actually. Sorry about that. I did a paper on it, and every now and then get flung back into that frame of mind. It's the insanity seeping its way into the fractures...
