Make it look like I am working

Hi I am current in a job I hate but will be starting a new job in 3 weeks, how do I make it look like I am working really hard, and not really do a thing?

Many answers all I'm afraid desk based PC job type things:

Get a phone head set, and sit talking to yourself people will assume you are helping someone.

If you use any new software/app whatever, sit staring at screen, muttering and swearing, people will assume you are having grief with new app.

Walk around building (espically if circular type building) with paper/file in your hands, I knew someone who made one "lap" last 3 hours.

Get some really old files out to "clarify a point" and spend hours going through them.

If you know any Access 97 or similar programs, write a routine that will take ages (huge cross-tab or something) and sit watching status bar move accross scrren, Access 97 is v good as it gets to 99% and stays there forever. If questioned as to why you cannot do anything else say "well last time it crashed out at about here and I need to see what is happening"

Use any ESRI GIS product, you will spend loads of time re-booting your PC (ooops! if any ESRI lawyers are here this is FAIR COMMENT and not libel)

Are they any good ? smiley - smiley

Thanks for the help in this matter, excellent ideas only few problems, we work in a paperless office and so no old files to go through. Headset is broken and no one will approve from me to get a new one as I leave in 2 weeks - tight!
The rest however are wonderful and I will try them with pride.
Keep Smiling :0)

I myself have been confronted with the same problem.
To make it LOOK i was working i basically stepperd outside for a cigarette every 1/2 hour, with a very concerned look on my face portraying i was immersed in thought regaring a 'new account' i was trying to 'set up'. That, coupled with short little 'temper tantrums' (from all the work i was doing) out in the back room pretty much encouraged everyone to leave me alone.

good luck.

hope you smoke.

Hi Molotov and welcome to H2G2!
I'm Shadow one of the Assistant Community Editors. One of the reasons you haven't had many visitors to your page is you haven't put up an introduction. Most people see that there is no intro and just move on, because you can't post to the person's page unless they have one. If you need help setting one up in HTML you can E-Mail me at [email protected] and I'll be more than happy to help you. Welcome again,
~S

No worries, just kept seeing your name pop up on the new persons list and kept trying to pop round and welcome you. So...I thought I'd try a different tack and see if I couldn't manage it some other way. I'm a persistent sort of booger when it comes to stuff like that. smiley - winkeye
Have a good one,
