...fasten a leather thong?
Agapanthus Started conversation May 25, 2004
I have just been given a pendant on a leather thong. It looks great like that and the loop on the pendant is clearly designed for a thong and would look stupid on a chain, so changing the thong isn't an option. The problem is that the thong has been left unfastened and I can't work out how to deal with it. I could just tie a big knot in it but I find that that really really irritates my neck, and I don't want to leave the thong long enough to pull on over my head because then the pendant disappears into the depths of my capacious cleavage and no one can see it (and it's not comfy). Is there any clever way of making a fastening I can open and close and that I (cack-handed) can make easily? I don't mind nipping out and buying a bit or a bob to do it with, but do object to expensive or specialist equipment I'll probably never use again!
Many thanks

There are specialist bead shops which do a range of fastenings. You might be able to use ordinary pliers or glue to attach the ends of the thong to these (instead of the usual fine cord or fishing line).
Alternatively, get a small hair-grip, non-pierced earring or crocodile clip (if you are more the macho type!) and grab the ends of the thong in that. That is certainly easy to do and undo and might be less irritating than a knot but only you will be able to judge that.

There are things (that I don't know the English name for) that you use for hiding nots in home-made necklaces:

If you manage to find two of the spiral formed ones, small enough, you might be able to glue them onto the leather cord.
To link the two loops together you could use a small what-ever-you-call-it:

I've seen some very simple and small ones

I had pendant like that once, and I bought a leather bootlace to hang it on. I'm not sure how easy it's going to be to describe how I fixed it without diagrams
I tied a simple knot in one end, but before I pulled it tight I slipped the other end through the loop. The I did the same with the other end so that the whole bootlace made a big loop which could be made larger or smaller by sliding the two knots together or apart. It couldn't come undone becuase the two knots would butt up against each other when the loop was at its largest.
Does that make sense?

That would be effectively a friction fastening, like on some bags or pulley systems. One problem would be if the largest extent of the thong loop were insufficient to go over the head. I'm not sure whether the doubled-up parts would count as visually distracting (depending on thickness) and whether the knots would still be uncomfortable.
Depending on the nature of the thong and the dexterity of the person doing and undoing it, it might be possible to attach standard sewing kit poppers or hook and eye.

I have to say, having read the subject line, that I am very disappointed with the contents of this thread.

Hush now, children...
Unfortunately the thong is very thick and knots in it end up REALLY chunky and uncomfortable - my neck is delicate as finest satin, obviously. I think I may have to see what can be done visiting a craft store for whatsits and gidgets. And hoping I don't puncture myself during the sewing/ pliers bit.

I was going to suggest a solution involving knots, however I'm now going to suggest saving both ends of the leather so that they taper into one another and glueing them.
