A Conversation for How do I...?

Make A Kite?

I've always wanted one of those huuuuuuge kites (that type that pull you off your feet) but they're very expensive. How do I make a kite at home, or find out about home kite making?

kea ~ Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small, unregarded but very well read blue and white website

I bet there are heaps of instructions onliine - try a websearch.

Also, there might be a kitemaking/flying group near where you live.

Sorry I can't be more help - I made kites when I was younger (the tail is very important), but don't remember much in the way of practical tips.

Good luck! (and let us know how you get on smiley - smiley)

Hi Spinks,
Though I've not tried to make a kite you can find plans online or buy books with designs for kites in them.
If you want to make one then you'll probably need to be handy with a sewing machine. You'll also need to get hold of the material and lines - either mail order or direct from a kite shop.
If your sewing machine skills are like mine - not there - then perhaps it'd be better to start off with some of the simpler kite designs. That might be a good idea if you've no experience of kite flying either.

Ok to make a kite you will need
1) piece of paper
2)markers (pens)
3)two wooden dowels - 16" long - packing tape or strong tape
4)kite string
5)cloth for tails
Heres how to make a kite
a) measure and cut the piece of paper to 16" long by 16" width
b)decorate kite with markers
c)tape the two dowels from one end to the other cross the dowels in the centre
d)attach tape holding down the ends of the dowels to the paper
e)punch holes and attach the string to the end of the kite the string should be double the length of the kite
f)attach the cloth for tails
and hey presto you have a kite
