A Conversation for How do I...?
... find my computer's specs?

No, my computer's not short-sighted, it's just a few years old and its exact details are unknown. This is not normally a problem, but I was just looking to apply to beta test a game and they ask for, amongst other things, my system specs. Can I find these out somehow, or is it something all self-respecting computer users should have committed to memory?

Belarc Advisor is a handy-dandy little app to have on your PC.

Right-click on My Computer and select Properties. This gives you basic details such as the exact operating system, the amount of memory and on some machines, the type and speed of processor as well.
Many video cards put up the size of their memory on the screen when you turn them on first, so look sharp at the info on the screen as you turn on the computer.

There's also the System Information utility that's usually located in Accessories -> System Tools.
I would also recommend a program called Everest, which is does a higly detailed analysis of all hardware and software on your computer, plus other system analysis and benchmarking abilities. Although the free Home Edition was ceased last month, it's still possible to download the program from various IT resource websites.

I wonder if Everest does more than Belarc.
Thanks both for the suggestions - I'd been messing about in the Control Panel trying to find stuff.

There's a hady little program called 'HWINFO' (stands for HardWareINFO) that you can download from http:\\www.hwinfo.com (download link is http://www.hwinfo.sk/files/hwinf497.zip) Its a program that runs from a DOS prompt and lists everything thats plugged in to your computers motherboard, and the chipset of the motherboard, how much RAM and what type, what Hard Drive is installed and what CPU chip is installed (Pentium, Celeron etc). The program is free shareware for 14 days.
Also, if you're running windows, click ->start ->Run and type 'dxdiag' then press enter. This program will display the CPU speed and RAM.
Theres also another program that maybe installed on your PC called 'system information' and on my PC it can be found at "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSINFO\MSINFO32.EXE"
