I actually did what I've been aiming to do since last October - install linux on to my computer, so that I now have a dual-boot machine.

*so* exciting! I spent quite some time playing Frozen Bubble...

It's impressive the way that all the text is antialiased now... ...and I even figured out a (rather ugly) way of making the computer think its name is FireMaiden on a permanent basis (which, for me, took some doing...)
smiley - smiley She doesn't feel like my computer yet. And she had a major strop earlier where she wouldn't give me a cdrom back. But I think Firemaiden and I will get on okay. At least, I hope so...

My last computer was called Lucinda, but she liked to be called Luci for short... smiley - winkeye

Very small matter. mmm.

And then you're going to live in the uk for a year... I hope your first impressions are good, when you get here...smiley - winkeye I take it you've not been to our teensy little Island which you can realistically drive from practically any place to practically any other place in about 8, 9 hours or so?

Actually, I'll only be there for the fall semester (autumn semester?) of this year. My exchange is only that long.

I've never been to the UK... never been outside the US... heck, never been north of NY, south of North Carolina, or West of Kentucky. smiley - erm (been to the Atlantic ocean, though smiley - winkeye). This trip is breaking all of that... which has me both scared to death and excited beyond belief. smiley - wow And it will be a bit strange to be able to drive just about anywhere in the country in 8 or 9 hours - it takes me 7 hours just to get from home to my university! When Rich was here, he commented on just how long it took to get places - and then I showed him a map and pointed out the tiny patch of land we stayed on to do all that, and he was amazed. smiley - bigeyes I can't wait. It's gonna be an adventure like none other I've ever had...

smiley - boing

I just hope I don't let any of the people who've been waiting to meet me when they *do* meet me. smiley - erm

Wow. I went to France (only for one night, mind you) when I was about 9/10; to Boston & Cape Cod when I was 2, to Germany when I was 14, and to Prague about three years ago... oh and to Disneyland Paris. But I don't really count that - it's miles and miles away from Paris itself...

7 hours from you to university, and about the same amount of time to get to England, I guess, depending on how far away you are from the airport smiley - winkeye

Don't worry about living up to expectations - there are definitely people on here whom I get along with really well online, and, well, don't seem to have all that much in common with in real life. Wierd, huh?

Not all that weird. I've come across a few people I was great friends with online that I didn't particularly like in real life. I've found the opposite to be more true, though - people I'm not very good friends with online I've found I *really* like IRL. smiley - smiley

And it'll take me about 7 hours to get to England. My transatlantic flight's leaving from Chicago. smiley - cool But I have a two-hour flight to get there from Harrisburg, which is about half an hour from here. So actually it'll be nearly 10 hours. smiley - erm

I'm glad I'm doing some travelling finally. My family's known for staying pretty much put - my dad only travels on the rare occasions he takes time off, and even then we only visit relatives.

I don't know how easy it'll be, but you should try to at least get to France and/or Ireland while you're here.

My uncle and his family have foreign holidays very regularly, and my mother's travelled quite a bit (she even lived in Kenya for five years), and, I pIan to get about a bit more when I have some money. But I guess in the US it's so big, going from one side to the other is almost like me going to Europe, except that wherever you are, you speak the language. And I've by no means exhausted the things to do and places to go even in the North of England...

Oh yeah - I mean, I could never even begin to try to explore my own country. I live in such a tiny slice of it, and there's so much I've never seen! Someday, someday. When I'm not having to pay for transatlantic plane tickets. smiley - winkeye

And I'll try to get to both France and Ireland. I've been wanting to for ages - maybe I'll take a weekend (or two) while I'm in London this fall and visit them. smiley - cool
