Well , I've been on the road more then I would have expected the last few weeks , moving assorted vehicles to new homes , generally over 300 miles from where they were. Anyone want a 35 foot Winnabago ?
Anyhow I just got to start playing with Linux on an office machine , aiming at getting it to act as the gateway between a cable internet hookup and a LAN. The trap... thinking this will be hard. Spent a day trying to get online , tech support from the cable company was ; well ; useless ( if they don't know what a DNS is , how much help can they be? ) and I felt I was just missing something obvious. Today tried again and was online in 5 seconds , literally. For those of you who run into problems , mine were a: the driver for the eithernet card wasn't right ( I'd read the name off the chips but it turned out there were several series using the same name ) so I swapped the cable to the other card ( had been the LAN ) to see if that was a problem. b: I was trying to find IP addresses , DNS addresses etc. when all I needed to do was enable DHCP and all that would be handled ( the clue here was tech support knew nothing about any of this ).
The lesson , try the easy way first
Now the fun begins , online , have access to all the online docs etc. and can start on getting the LAN back up and running samba .
