Greeting newcomers

I have been greeting newcomers using the following:
I saw you were new here, so I thought I'd drop by and say hi!
I remember how strange this place was, when I first joined!
I'm more confident now though, so I have applied to become an ACE; that's Assistant Community Editor.
Is thatsmiley - coolor what?smiley - biggrin
The ACES page is here: http://www.h2g2.com/ACES if you need any help with anything, just ask there, or reply to this & I'll try and help!
You will need to know how to type the smileys, there's loads of them, so stick the page in your favourites!smiley - ok

I'd say it's pretty good. One quick point, if the person has written something on their page, I think it's nice to get the conversation rolling by mentioning what they have written at the start - just say that you've been to their home town, or you too are a fan of their favourite TV programme or whatever is appropriate. Sometimes, though, it is hard to, especially if all they have written is something like "I'm Fred from Bloggstown" and you've never heard of the place and know nothing about them.
In those cases I tend to ask them to tell me a bit more about them, what they like and dislike etc.

Although I must confess that I've not been about much lately to greet newcommers as much as I should smiley - blue
