I've tried to link to a forum conversation before e.g.
F19585?thread=331048, but can i hide this behind a name, like you do when linking to a guide entry or external site?

Depends if you want the link to be in a conversation or a guide entry.

In a guide entry, you use the same code as if you were linking to another guide entry, such as Here's a conversation type thing.

In a conversation, you can't use GuideML, so the only way to link to other conversations is to type the link as you did in your question above, and it automatically becomes a link.

But your Guide entry has to be in Guide ML, not alabaster, for that to work?

Alabaster is a skin, and has nothing to do with it. Skins just change what the site looks like, nothing more. For links to work like that you need it in GuideML, rather than plain text, which i expect is what you meant.
