It's a big birthday tomorrow, so the available of my nearest and dearest are coming for a celebration dinner on Saturday. Try as I might I couldn't make it more than a baker's dozen. Could I count the two children as one? Could I take my teddy bear? Would anyone else notice or care? (possible as at least one of the guests is even older than I am)
Solution - ask a couple of good friends from the village. Daft, isn't it?

You should have mentioned sooner, we could have sent 'Ivan', who has been known to occupy a 14th place

O heck. Sorry, I'm tired. Superstition, I mean. Although - maybe you could make it a Murder mystery dinner - then there really would be an excuse for an extra, empty chair!

There certainly will be cake - three if I'm any judge of surreptitious mutterings. I'll need them for all the candles - today I strike three score years and ten. So there jolly well better be lots of prezzies as I'm not doing this again.

The (quite good) restaurant is next door. They are delivering tapas here first so that I can wander round talking to everybody and not just the two I'm sat next to. Then we are going to have our main and dessert courses next door.
The champagne has taken over my fridge. My manicure is pretty flash and I have a hair appointment before my sons get here later today,

It wasn't 13 after all but it was a good event - lots of good Champagne and The Settlement did us a fine dinner.
(Food is always good in Lincolnshire)
