This afternoon I was doing an extra volunteer session in our local library. A (very) young man came in to enquire about work experience.
Fifty five years ago I made a similar enquiry myself.

oh library work - I wish I'd stuck to my guns as a girl and gone into that for a living.
Can you offer him work experience?

me personally - no. I'm a volunteer, but I've directed him in the right direction.
I actually fought against becoming a librarian "because you like reading" being the ignorant comment of both family and teachers. I have, however, set up libraries (note the plural) from scratch. In Shanghai this meant 12 floors up in a new building with no working lift over a very cold Easter.
