Having just had our AGM this past week, the drama society has decided on Pirates of Penzance next year. Just a shame I won't be there to join in (well, it's unlikely, put it that way). We need to do a crowd-puller like that. We've made a loss this year on a show that was described as a 'Limp Salad' by the critic smiley - sadface I'm annoyed by that. The guy is in a 'rival' society within Portsmouth yet is allowed to be the local rag's critic. The show was OK, in fact. It didn't go as well as planned - there were for one thing too many problems to start off with. This time last year we'd lost our rehearsal venue (the University converted it's only hall with a stage into another lecture theatre - who ever heard of a university without a stage?), our performance venue (see above), our director (he decided this year to perform in the show - he ended up doing four parts!) and our musical director (he resigned from his post at the University as they hadn't paid him for three months. Anyone who listens to Classic FM will hear a recording of his of Widor's Toccata played quite often - that's how good he was. Our University is stupid sometimes! At least they've offered us some support - the Vice Chancellor must be thanked for that). I should know the show went well - I got roped in last minute to help backstage on all five nights.
