NYC and NY State
Gasoline Rainbows Posted Jun 19, 2000
I think you're missing the joke...or half joke. We NYC dwellers tend to believe the world revolves around us-- or at the very least the rest of New York State does. When he says New York State is divided in half, upstate and downstate...he's right. But he got the division wrong. Upstate starts north of the Bronx. As far as New Yorkers are concerned, the rest of the state just doesn't register and in all probablility should probably be renamed so as not to be confused with the true New York.

That was tried, as NYC tried to secede from the state. It wasn't done, because making a state within a state is illegal (except for west virginia, because of it's deciding to secede during the civil war), plus NYC gets all its water fom upstate. So, I say have the city (all of it) secede from the country and form it's own free nation. THEN we'll see if it's really the center of the world... sign my petition here: http://www.h2g2.com/F43030?thread=56123 Oh, and see if we can cough up enough for a desalinization plant. Man, do I sound like a native New Yorker or what?

Some New Yorkers actually did try to secede from the Union during the civil war to form a nation called "Trinesia" for three-islands (Long, Manhattan, and Staten, I guess), where slavery would be legal. I read about this in the Daily News once.

As a proud Queens dweller I'm disappointed at your little knock about my fine borough. Hey! The Son of Sam killed in Queens as well as the Bronx. Elmhurst was recently found by the federal government to by the most ethnically diverse area in the ENTIRE WORLD!!! It was also once the home of Malcom X as well as Jazz great Louis Armstrong. Actually, in years past, many great musicians made their homes in Queens, lured by the cheaper prices and roomier streets and sidewalks. Among them, James Brown, Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and others.
I live in an area known as "Koreatown," Flushing, a thriving community of immigrants from all over the world. It's wonderful that at any hour I can get any kind of food or drink imaginable on earth.
There are many diverse area where you can find anything you wish. Since our evil, fascist mayor banned fun from Manhattan, the strip clubs and topless bars have relocated to the outer boroughs, particularly Queens. Fun for Queens! If you remember the film "Men in Black," you know why the aliens came to Queens. God bless 'em! You are always welcome in my hometown.

You forgot to mention the five best things about Queens! The Mets, Socrates Sculpture Park, The Unisphere, Near Rockaway beach, and Jackson Diner! Or JFK airport, the contemporary Ellis Island, where every single immigrant to New York sets foot. Even though I live in Brooklyn, I agree with you 100% that Queens is the most exciting part of the most exciting city on Earth!

well, I'll admit Flushing is; I live near there. 'Tis called the second largest Chinatown in the city, but it seems to me there are far more Koreans and Japanese. I haven't a clue about Queens other than it housing the largest library in the country, and plenty of jazz greats, like you said.

The Queens Borough Public Library isn't the biggest, just the one with the most books circulating.

HI. I would think that Brooklyites think of Buffalo the same way me and all new yorkers who do not live there think of it. Buffalo is a cold dark dirty impoverished city with 20 feet of snow 10 months a year. I cn't imagine ever wanting to live there. Of course I have never been there and will never go there (on purpose, anyway). But that is what most people think of when they hear Buffalo. By the way, Buffalo Wyoming is a lovely, gorgious town in the foot of the Big Horn Mountains. Now that is a Buffalo I would not mind living in. And yes, there are buffalo in Buffalo, Wy.

if your stupid enough to call states and cities by the same name you have to expect those of us who live in the civilised world to get confused - if london was called england i wouldnt expect everyone to automatically know whether i was from england , england or england ,uk. new york is a dump anyway - thank god for osama b.l. and the international terrorist cartel.
