Greetings from jollie olde englande!
Buckram was indeed once used to make clothing - back in the 16th and 17th centuries it was used in the construction of doublets for men and stomachers for women. I have an idea it may have been involved in the making of codpieces though I may not be right there. I think its primary role was as a stiffener. (ooer)

Ah, thanks for the extra information. I'll try to find time to work it in to a revised version of the entry. Or perhaps the editors will do it when they finally work their way forward this far.
