Here's a thought, what has had the most effect on shaping modern society? War? Religion? Environment? Or are we all crazy and who knows why anything happens? Hmmmm... I'll think about this later.

Depending on how far you want to go back, I think that the domestication of animals actually had the MOST effect on society in general. Coming farther forward, I feel that it has been the printed word and the ability to spread that printed word that has created today's society. Without Guttenburg's printing press, many of the wars that have been fought would not have been (most notably th Spanish American War; pure yellow journalism), religions of all types would have had a harder time spreading (think about the religious section in your local book store) and scientific ideas and hypothesis would not have been spread as easily and effectively.
Sorry, guess I rambled on a bit too much. Here, have a brownie as an apology...
