The Universe?

Grandaddy

One Sunday, at Church, I asked myself if God really existed and came to my own personal conclusion: yeah...he probably does. This led to
me asking myself the same question that I continually asked my mother when I was younger: if God created the universe, who created God? As a youngster I thought this was a very clever thing to ask. Me, a mere child, picking holes in a well established faith. Of course, the adults were far too mature to consider this as relevant - it was much easier to ignore this kind of question in a quest to maintain their faith.

My point isn't to do with the ignorance of adults towards children. It's more to do with what there was before God. Did the God just suddenly come to be? In that case the universe could just have come into being instead, defeating the purpose of a higher creative force.

Furthermore, if God or the universe have not been around FOREVER, what was there before? Some would suggest nothing. But not just a space that was completely empty, I mean a nothing where not even the empty space existed - absolute nothingness.

This kind of puzzle is way beyond our realm of comprehension. We may (for now?!) have to content ourselves with the fact that there always has and always will be SOMETHING.
