I've just been to the Isle of Wight. Some body told me all the sheep there were in MINT condition - but they looked pretty ordinary to me...

WHY are the sheep in the UK painted with spray paint? I've never seen that here. We went to England and all the sheep looked like they'd been attacked by vandals (lots of those here, but they stick with walls and things that don't move.) Is this mint condition? Does it mean something? Does it make the SLIGHTEST bit of sense to someone not from England?

Most sheep aren't painted normally.... where did you go?

Wales, Scotland, England. All over the blinking country, there were these sheep with bits of red or blue or whatever color spraypainted right on top of their backs, usually more towards the tail. It didn't make any sense, and we didn't know who to ask, so we went home mystified. Some sheep were apparently more special than others, with two colors of spraypaint.

If it helps, we went in October of 99.

I think it's all an ownership thing. Farmers tend to be rather possessive about their sheep.

We use crayon here.. a special crayon designed for marking on live wool, so to speak. Usually it's used to distinguish which have been done and which haven't (like when docking or trimming feet). The different colours are so you can tell which job for which they are being marked. Also, sometimes you'll mark certain ones that you may need to pick out of the flock later on.. such as those that are being treated for one ailment or other.

That's because we used to raise them... And I miss them every year around March (lambing season) though I don't miss the running outside in the snowdrifts every 10 to 20 minutes checking on them. smiley - winkeye
