The java / ActiveX debate

From recent experience looking for a job placement for my course at uni, i have found that most companies i have seen use Microsofts COM and DCOM. As Java is the emerging technology, and as i've been told is better than the ActiveX components, I fail to understand why companies don't use java and it's API's.

Is mise Duncan

I realise I'm opening myself up to a serious flaming, but [imho] if you control the platform that the program is going to be run on then don't use Java.
Java comes into its own where you don't control the platform, which is why its so popular in the Internet world. Here again, use it for the client side...but not the server side.

Why not use Java everywhere?
- Its slow.
- Java programming knowledge isn't very widespread therefore maintenance of Java applications is expensive.
- Its not very powerful.

So there you have it - flame away smiley - sadface
