I have a new notebook! With an integrated modem! This baby makes my venerable desktop feel like a yoke of oxen (cue Mussorgsky). Now let's see how things go after Sunday, after the h2g2 eclipse.

Hell now I can hear that Mussorsky tune ... whilst I write ... it sounds interminable as if the road and the wet and the mud goes on for ever ... and all this for a laptop. I have recently bought a palmtop and feel really guilty about it as I still don't know how to dock it with my PC and I always expect it to open with the words DON'T PANIC in large friendly letters ... (It never does of course) and what was that about Moseley (oh that was a later post) did you ever vist Handsworth or Lozelles?? Have a hug on me

North of town!
I used to go through Handsworth all the time, on
the way home from work, but lived in Mosely, jeez,
for about 12 years. Are you a Brummie, Palmtop
Wielder?

No not a Brummie ... I'm a Scot by birth, though I have lived most of my life in the North of England ... and have been in Sheffield for the last 8 years (and I love it here!)
I was living in Brum in 1985 - 87 ... so was there during the riots ... one of my most famous understatements was made when my bus was diverted from Lozelles Road due to the fire ... I got home .. told my flat mate and she said " oh lets put the news on see if they mention it" and I said ... "Oh no it won't be THAT important" took me a while to live that one down ... maybe I'd better forget about being a researcher and journalist!

RIOTS????
I left England in the summer of 1984 when my mother
was terminally ill; I kept thinking I would be going
back any time, but I wound up looking after me dad for
another 15 years.
And American news is famously bad for not noticing
what goes on in other countries. So what was the
cause of rioting? Poll taxes?
btw, I lived in Edinburgh for about 4 months...winter
months, mostly, but was there for the fringe fest.

I personally think the riots were caused by the lack of investment in the area ... they happened on the Monday after the Handsworth Carnival weekend ... and THAT was a really pitiful event ... a few stalls in the park ... one or two poxy bands that no-one had heard of!
In the evening I could sense the atmosphere was getting oppressive and I went home early feeling very unsafe ... of course I had forgotten all that by Monday and the fires ... Although a lot of damage was caused ... there was only one fatality (one too many I know!)
I lived in Edinburgh in the winter one year ... unfortunately for most of that time I was living rough and it was BLOODY cold. I was born in Motherwell ... but have never been back there!

That's a shame. I used to love the Moseley Festival. This will show how old I am: when I lived in Moseley, the festival outdoor band was UB40.
As for Edinburgh, I lived on Netherby Road, near Grantham. I lived there till Christmas, and there was only about 6 hours of daylight.
Jeez!

There's nothing wrong with Grantham, Oh apart from the fact it was voted most boring town in UK 3 times and Maggie of course but its still HOME SWEET HOME.
Key: Complain about this post
