Bringing courtesans and eunuchs to church

I sang in a church today. This is not something that happens every day, or even every decade. For an atheist like me, it’s a bit like invading enemy territory.
However, I did it today because the Bradford University Society for Operettas and Musicals had been asked to take part in an annual concert by the various University musical societies called ‘The Christmas Sing’, held in a different local church each year. And so it was that BUSOM descended on Great Horton Methodist Church to deliver ten minutes of secular fun in an event otherwise mostly devoted to Christmas carols and serious religious music. We sang our four-part harmony arrangement of ‘White Christmas’, and one of our company did ‘Love I Hear’, a Stephen Sondheim song from ‘A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum’. We also performed ‘Comedy Tonight’, another song from the same show, in which a lot of different characters – or singers, in this case - have very short solos, some only one word long.
But I got a whole three words to myself. And I really relished the fact that the three words I got to sing to the church congregation were ‘Courtesans and eunuchs’.

Well, we have competition in the acronym department. Some of the other people involved in today's concert were members of the Bradford University Music Society.

It was somewhat similar back in my Uni days. The name of the film club that ran the Union's cinema was deliberately called 'Film Unit', so that we could legitimately answer the office telephone with introduction, "Eff you".
