Potatoes are talking. And they're using my voice...
Ormondroyd Started conversation Feb 12, 2004
Today I stood in the foyer at the University of Bradford and heard potatoes speaking in my voice, and in those in some of my friends. The potatoes were not your average spuds. They were dressed in little costumes. There were alien potatoes, witch potatoes, a potato James Bond - even a potato Jerry Springer!
No, I haven't hit the again, and this has nothing to do with my previous Journal Entry. This was the premiere of 'Spudtacular Spudtacular', Bradford University's pioneering venture into potato puppetry. The strangely-clad spuds 'performed' on the stage of a Punch & Judy-type booth, controlled by puppeteers not quite concealed below. The voices were pre-recorded, so I was able to stand back and listen to myself putting on a variety of odd vocal tones, from a screeching to a booming Frankenstein's monster. .
I wouldn't usually say that I like the sound of my own voice, but I thought I made a good and a pretty decent Southern belle for the Jerry Springer sketch. I had written some of the material, too, and I was pleased to hear some of my best gags getting laughs. The student audience particularly seemed to like the one about the baddie in the Bond sketch wanting to be the first potato President of the USA - which, as the potato Bond girl pointed out. '...is ridiculous. You can't have the United States being governed by a stupid, vicious character with the intelligence of a vegetable.'
All in all it was, I thought, a good start for root vegetable drama. And it all happens again tomorrow lunchtime at the Richmond Building foyer, University of Bradford!

Sounds like fun I wish I could go and see it... Hey, if it's a success again tomorrow, maybe the show can tour the country
