I've just read your bit about Michael Moore - have you read the autobiography by Ben Hamper "Tales of a Shop Rat" it describes the Roger and Me story from within the factory(s). It is an excellent book and mentions Michael a bit, ben makes a couple of cameos in Roger and Me, ben also has appeared on some of his TV shows

Sounds interesting, but the only 
by Ben Hamper I can find on Amazon is one called 'Rivethead'. It seems to be about life on a car assembly line and has an introduction by Michael Moore. Is that the one you mean?

sounds like it, I read it about 10 years ago !!! perhaps it has been re-titled
