Relaxing with Gondoliers

HMS Pinafore! Wow, one of my favourites, after The Mikado and possibly Gondoliers. Trial By Jury was also good, but too short, I thought, to make it a classic unless there was something supporting it.
So, got to ask, what's your favourite song from them?

As a member of the ladies chorus, I'd have to say "anything that I don't get to sing". Actually, I like both 'I am the monarch of the sea' and 'For he is an Englishman' equally well.

Have you seen 'Topsy Turvey' the new Mike Leigh film about G&S? (it's new in Britain anyway!) I really enjoyed it, although 3 hours is quite a long time to spend in a cinema. We did 'The Sorcerer' last year, so quite a few scenes were very poignant!

Alas not yet.. I'm not sure if it's near me yet? I don't know - probably one I'll get on video later. And I agree with you that the best songs are sung by the men, especially Sir Joseph Porter! I agree with your choice of favourites too - thouh the story of how he got to be the Admiral is another one I really like.

I'm not sure when you're from, but it's been on limited release on the art circuit since 18 February.

Yes, I like Sir Joseph's song about how he became an admiral too - at least the female chorus get to sing the refrain.

Ah yes, I remember that well.... My sister Rebekah always enjoyed rehearsing it very loudly. I never really got involved directly, which I regret now, but it is because of her I started to like G&S, and recorded productions that were occasionally broadcast on BBC2 etc...
Incidently, I am in Southampton. smiley - smiley
