Looking at Russia, turning your country into a dictatorial police state seems to work, if you are trying to push the sea change back. (plus creating major distractions for the population and holding the media).

Apologies for not replying - as you may have noticed, we've got a show-and-tell problem with the convos going. (Brian's working on it.)
As I said in the essay, I dunno if civilisation will manage to survive this latest mess - after all, it's a worldwide situation. The last time everybody went suicidally nuts like this, we all lucked up because the US wasn't included in the madness, having had a prophylactic dose of massive economic woes that led to a fortuitous kind of leadership. FDR's New Deal was so successful that it kept the home-grown fascists at bay, leaving us free to come in on the right side when the war came along.
This time, we may be out of luck. Nobody with a big-enough army appears to be immune.
