Apologies for not replying - as you may have noticed, we've got a show-and-tell problem with the convos going. (Brian's working on it.)

As I said in the essay, I dunno if civilisation will manage to survive this latest mess - after all, it's a worldwide situation. The last time everybody went suicidally nuts like this, we all lucked up because the US wasn't included in the madness, having had a prophylactic dose of massive economic woes that led to a fortuitous kind of leadership. FDR's New Deal was so successful that it kept the home-grown fascists at bay, leaving us free to come in on the right side when the war came along.

This time, we may be out of luck. Nobody with a big-enough army appears to be immune.
