You've written an intriguing Entry, there! I'd only vaguely heard of Douglas being on a quest to find a better phrase in the 'Doe a Deer' song, so I would appreciate it if you could add more detail about the background to it, and whether Douglas himself had any suggestions for improvement. Then it would be a great conversation starter!

I must admit I don't understand either of your solutions:

la, they're always on my side
la, what keeps us safe at night

What is the "la" you are referring to here?

I remember Douglas's request that people find the answer to this problem and post it here. Could you expand this into a short article (known on h2g2 as an "Entry") which explains the problem, talks about The Salmon of Knowledge and then proposes a few solutions?

Of course, any solution has to rhyme with "do" to fit the rhyming scheme of the song.

My own solution would be "Lar, a gibbon on the go".

I remember this vaguely in 'The Last Salmon of Doubt' and found something online that mentions it too: http://stream.sonictruths.net/post/11394684356/douglas-adams-on-do-re-mi-and-the-unacceptable

I must admit I'm a bit puzzled too by your suggestions:

smiley - musicalnote"la, they're always on my side" or "la, they're never on my side"

Unless you mean 'Law', referring to the police?smiley - bluelight
In which case, if 'law' is allowed you could have a solution of, say, 'Lard – is it Vegan-friendly? No.'smiley - flyingpig

I wonder where Douglas's original conversation has gone?

Are you still around on h2g2? Only you appear to have only posted the once, and I'm afraid I still don't quite understand the reference.
