As today is Remembrance Sunday I thought I'd repost this from 2 yrs ago.
A Poem For Remembrance Day.
The whistle is blown, the men do surge
Over the top and into the storm
The enemy they have to purge
In a battle outside the norm
What carnage the soldiers they do meet
Men die just feet from their trenches
The enemy faced won't countenance defeat
The dead laid out on makeshift benches
Trapped in craters filled with spoil
Rivers of blood, body parts a plenty
Onwards and upwards they must toil
Yardage made, probably twenty
Hour after hour, day after day
The noise of battle is dreadful to hear
The dead are left where they lay
Soldiers have no time to shed a tear
At the battles end there is a quiet gloom
In no-mans land is seen a single flower
A blood red poppy in full bloom
This was seen at the eleventh hour
We will remember them.
