In the early seventies (I think) the Beeb and the English press, quietly changed the spelling and pronunciation of the branch of Islam that is now known as Shi'ites (it AINT pronounced like that in Arabic).
I wonder how long it will be before they alter the pronunciation of the new Japanese PM. I have just (half) listened to a news bulletin and thought that they must have been talking about Gee Dubbya!!

I am listening to the BeeB's 'wild' service and (I would swear) that all the newsreaders are revelling in the name as the pronunciation has got more and more 'definite'. Nobody has yet got the giggles but you can detect the smirk in their voices!! They are obviously having piles of fun!
