Foxes at it every night..
Effers;England. Started conversation Dec 17, 2011
For the past week, on and off, I hear the male fox bark at various times after dark.
It's a loud high pitched bark.
It's not the scream of the vixen I've heard...so I presume its the males fighting over territory...pure guesswork though. Because its also said the fox will be calling a vixen.
When I lived in the countryside in Sussex, I only remember hearing the screech of the vixen in winter which is to do with mating.
But in the city the population density of foxes is far greater..(like people I suppose and cats and dogs )
From what I read on the web..they can be both monogamous or not...and even different families of cubs can be in the same den.
Any way it makes a pleasant change from police sirens...

"Any way it makes a pleasant change from police sirens... "
Sure does, Effers. It reminds me of times gone by (1969), when foxes in the city were a rarity, and of this song from 'Ummagumma':
Grantchester Meadows - Pink Floyd

"Hear the lark and harken
To the barking of the dog fox
Gone to ground..."

The track that follows that one is good fun:
Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict - Pink Floyd

Ps I'm not assuming you don't know this early Floyd album... It's just amusing to revisit, and to remember that time when so much was new in popular music - and when Thai sticks were abundant...

You haven't responded, so I guess you might feel invaded.
I'll leave you with a tune I've been meaning to share with you for some time (hope you like it):

I don't feel the least invaded by you RE. It's great you're here.
I wanted to formulate good responses to your lovely posts..not just something quick and trivial. I love everything to do with music so much.
I'm all over the place of late...and was falling asleep on and off.
I'll post a message on your space to make sure you get the message.

I'm going to be listening to all that music later.
Thank you. I should have aknowledged I can see that, as you new to my journals.
Apologies for that. I hope you come back sometime

Just woken up - technically, 3 hours is more than a siesta, bearing in mind that the ideal length is 20 minutes...
I'll continue on the thread you've opened on my home page so that this one can be reserved for further fox sightings.
Incidentally, I agree with Wiki's recommendation that headphones be used to get the most from 'Grantchester Meadows'... and you might as well keep them on for 'Several species...'.
See you on the other side, so to speak.

And they are at it again tonight.
I should be bothered to go out and record..I can't..(I slept for aq few hours in the tent last night..and that was pretty good to keep waking up to).
But seriously that idea of mine is crazy. I was quite chilly...
