BIRD

Bird you dropped.................................
Straight out of winter and
Onto my garden in Peckham.
I dug you a resting hole.
Thousands of miles below
(My garden in Peckham),
Shines a warmer sun
Which I wanted you to be
A little closer to.

I've just read a whole lot of really bad poetry in the UG, I was looking for something inspirational, but all I got was depressed. I wondered whether some of it was really written by Vogons.

None of them have purpose. They are poetry.

you're right. I never could get poetry. But I did think I understood your Bird poem though.

Whenever I've tried to write anything poetry related, it comes out all soppy or awkward. I admire those who can choose the right words for a very few lines.

I'd be disappointed if you 'understood' it. Any decent poem should have a few layers of meaning and ambiguity. Yes there's a basic narrative in that poem..but there's a bit of poignancy.

I'm not sure that poem is that great but it's poignant. Sometimes a not great poem is good too, if it's principally poignant.

I've written poems since I was seven. The whole journey has always been one of learning. I've intense periods of writing them and then years go by with nothing.

We did stuff at school in a more analytical way for Eng Lit which I loved. But that's just a little scratch on the surface.

I'd like to maybe...*maybe* start writing again for noohootoo. But I'll see what the atmosphere is like for reception of work.

But heavy handed pinning down won't help.

I do appreciate you dropping by. I'm pretty raw psychologically at present and feel vulnerable..so I might sound 'defensive'.
