Fingers and the base ten
goldencamus Posted Apr 16, 2005
By far the greatest use of having ten fingers and toes is that our number base, the decimal system, and consequentially the concepts of percentage.
Ten is how we choose to count. Only since the arrival of computers and the use of number bases such as binary and hexadecimal (base 16) has there been a challenge to the supremacy of the number 10.
Ten has been the number that is significant in most human endeavours, and has allowed the evolution of the alpha numerical values founded in the Middle East.
From the flexibility of learning to the facility of basic calculations ten remains pivotably important.
Ten commandments, choices out of ten. it is the default setting of human thought and endeavour. Think of how different our world wwould likely to be if we had eight four or twenty four combined digits.
Our maths would alter overnight to accommodate these situations.
