Welcome, welcome, welcome, to the wonderful site of H2G2 (other wise known as hootoo - you will see this word a lot). I am an <./>ACE</.>, and I'm here to help you settle into your new home
H2G2 is a living, breathing guide to Life, the Universe and Everything, and it's something YOU can take part in. You can write entries on all manner of subjects, and if it's something you think would look good in our Edited Guide (where all the best research goes), you can submit it to Peer Review. Take a look at the <./>writing-guidelines</.> for more information on that.
I've created a little list of links, just for you, so click here <./>A1159210</.> and have a look at them (actually the links are my daughters...but hey!! Hootoo is one big family )
If you click on each link, they will take you to parts of hootoo no sane person should ever go alone on this site.....
......but as it seems no one here is sane, it doesn't matter does it!
Have a look around, pop into my personal space and read some conversations that I have on the go at the moment and you will see how things work. Don't be frightened to jump in on conversations, hootooers don't bite (well, some of them do, but I'll steer you well clear of those), just be aware of the thread you are reading and whether or not it is a private conversation between two people.
Remember, if you get lost, shout for help and hopefully I'll be around to give you a helping hand. In case I'm not around, just leave a message here <./>ACE</.> and someone will be with you just as soon as they can. Failing that, just click on MY SPACE on the left hand side of your screen and you'll get back to your personal space.
Remember, I'm here to help.

Cheers. I think I kind of messed up the Peer Review thing. I sent a piece in, but I think I misunderstood what the guide was for. Apparently there is the Unedited Guide (he said there were two parts the edited and the unedited) that the person who told me to remove my "plate of chips" entry, but I can only find brief references to it. Where is the forum for it? Thats kind of why I signed up, I'd like to keep adding a few silly entries to it every now again so people can see them.

Hi there - I'm Amy and an ACE like lil. Just happened to come across this in my surfing and thought I'd add my two cents. We Aces don't work in the sense that we get paid - but we do volunteer our time, when we have it, to greeting new researchers on the website.
And the big forum is over here --> http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/Askh2g2 .
It's not the only forum, obviously, and is actually full of loads of subforums (if you want to get technical), but it's where most people hang out quite a lot of the time.

Oh, thank you very much both of you. So being an ACE is that kind of like a forum Moderator? Volunteering for the job, but you can edit threads and such like?
Oh and thanks for the link.

By the way, how can I start a group? I was told I could start a group about my entry.

Our Moderators are BBC staff.. ACE's, Guru's and Scouts are all volunteers in hoootoo..
Anyone can press the button to have something moderated, but they have to have a good reason for doing so..
I have looked up the societies in hootoo so far, and you can have a look yourself here:-

Hope this is some help to you...

I'm sorry, I must seem terribly dense. I'm used to forum moderators being the ones who are brought in to generally just look after what is going on in forums... whereas the administrators and super administrators are the ones who get paid... anyway.
Thanks for the link. Again I'm probably being dense, but those article/group pages... how are they made in to group pages? I mean is there a forum that you have to submit them to (i.e like if you want to create a edited guide entry you send it to peer review, and if you want an alternative writing entry you send it to the Alternative Writing Workshop), and then be selected before you make it in to a group. And then how do you get people to join?... So many questions, but while you're here I just thought I'd ask.

You just create a Guide Entry.. without putting it to Peer Review
This is an example:-

Ah... I think I see. So is there anywhere that you can advertise specifically for people to join your group? Could I do that on AskH2g2?

It really depends what your society is about .. but Supermoo has opened this page:-

If you thing you come into that category then you can ask him to include you in his listing...

Re: Moderators -
In the traditional sense, Aces are sort of like moderators on most message boards; we just keep an eye on people and try to make people feel welcome and explain stuff and so forth.
However, there are also Moderators on h2g2 which are alterted when anything is posted that is offensive (etc), which are paid staff along with the rest of the BBC staff (the Italics, or editors).
Hope that clears it up a bit.
