It was quite a gale! A lot of rain on and off all night, and still very windy this morning.smiley - erm We decided to go to the Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm, and the Orkney Fossil & Vintage Museum in Burray.

The waves were still dashing against the Churchill Barriers, and the car was covered in spray. It made YD duck! Scapa Flow was choppier than the sea on the outside of the barriers.smiley - erm

The chapel was built by Italian POWs in WWII, using 2 Nissen huts covered in plasterboard & concrete. It was decorated by Domenico Chiocchetti, one of the prisoners, who also made the sculpture of St George & the dragon, which is outside the chapel. It's a beautiful place, and the painted bricks are so realistic.smiley - smiley

The museum was fascinating. There's quite a mixture of artefacts in the museum, from old magazines & books, furniture, photos, woodworking tools etc upstairs to fluorescent rocks, horseshoe crabs, fossil fish & plants downstairs. (There are a number of fossil fishbeds in Orkney). YD loved the fish skeletons & ammonites.smiley - smiley

On the way back we did a bit more shopping in Kirkwall - fudge smiley - drool, miniature whiskies, oatcakes, cheese, chocolate, smiley - choc & some baby slippers for a neighbour's grandson's 1st birthday. O/H took YD to find some magazines & books for the journey home, while I nipped in the tourist information in search of another squeaky haggis. Success! One left! It's minus its box, but never mind. The McHamish haggis family is complete. The number of times we've been lucky on this holiday is quite incredible. smiley - oksmiley - goodluck

YD was very tired today, smiley - yawn and not in a good mood at all.smiley - sadface We've been doing so much this holiday, and it's about 3 days too long for her. She wants to go home & see her pets. (She didn't mention her big sister!)smiley - erm

O/H left us at the hotel, while he drove into Stromness to book us a meal somewhere. YD & I are very tired, and my bad knee and back are playing up now with all the walking we've been doing. We had dinner at the Royal Hotel - food & wine good, but veg overcooked. Back to the hotel early to get YD to bed. It's an early start tomorrow as we're catching the 11am ferry, so check in by 10.30am.
