My cousin from New Zealand came to Cambridge for the day today. I don't think we've seen each other since her family emigrated to NZ, when she was 8 and I was 11, many many years ago. My sister (who has met her more recently - only about 15 years ago) came over too, and we gave H the full Cambridge tourist experience.
We met her at the station and drove over to my college, where we were able to leave the car (thanks to our friendly porters), and walked through Sidgwick Site, past many of the Arts Faculty buildings, to the Backs. Cut through Clare College to King's and visited King's Chapel. Then went back up Trinity Street to Trinity (pointing out the not-Newton's-apple-tree-but-maybe-a-descendent-thereof) and John's. Had a quick look at the Bridge of Sighs and watched people punting, then back to King's Parade for an excellent lunch at the Cambridge Chop House.
In the afternoon we admired the Corpus clock, picked up the car again and drove to Grantchester: walked through the village, saw Grantchester Meadows, The Orchard tearooms (and the orchard itself) and the Old Vicarage (now the home of a certain notorious Lord), before having a coffee in the Red Lion and dropping H off at the station to go back to London.
A whistle-stop tour, but very enjoyable, and we caught up on lots of family news en route.
I really enjoy showing Cambridge to people, because even though touristy, it is very beautiful. Douglas, you have been warned!

Indeed THAT Grantchester Meadows. I think there is a Syd Barrett tour, but I'm afraid I'm not qualified to do that one!
