First outdoor cake of the year!

Took the day off work today, to make the long weekend even longer, and a friend (G) came to visit from London. We had planned to go to Grantchester, but I was a bit worried about the weather, because yesterday evening it poured with rain, plus there was a howling gale, and I had to turn the heating back on (quite something for me, as the flat is usually pretty warm).
Anyway, as we were going by car (G has an arthritic hip) and had a bit umbrella with us we decided to risk it. It was cloudy when we set off, but gradually brightened up, and there was even a blink of sun in the afternoon.
We had a moderately OK lunch at one of the numerous pubs in the village - a bit disappointing actually, I've had much better food there in the past. Then we went for a little walk round, looked in the church and walked down the road to peer through Lord & Lady Archers' front gate at the many sculptures in their garden, including the 'shepherd and sheep' group that was stolen and recovered recently. G wondered if shepherds in Cambridge are usually naked ...
Then we went to the Orchard for dessert and a cup of tea. Delicious summer fruit tartlets. There was a very tame chaffinch on the lookout for crumbs, in fact we had to practically shoo it off the table - it was actually about an inch from G's plate, about to help itself to some of the berries!
A very pleasant day, and now only three days at work before the next break. It's horrible to feel that you don't want to go into the office, and I usually love my job. Still, only three months to go till Acting Boss leaves (for a month's hol at the end of the contract), and Lovely Boss will be back on 1 October.
