On Peet's recommendation I have joined the local Freecycle group. See http://uk.freecycle.org/
Yesterday evening I offered my old sewing machine, which I have been trying to give away to friends' children/grandchildren for ages, mainly because it is too heavy for me to lug up and down stairs.
Boy, are those guys quick off the mark! Got home from work and checked my email to find half a dozen offers to take it off my hands. Now waiting for a reply from a person who wants it to finish a patchwork quilt ...

Just to finish the story - got in touch with one of the potential takers, and she came to fetch the sewing machine .... on her bike! (very Cambridge 
)
I was a bit worried as she attached it to the back carrier with a couple of elastic thingies, as it is EXTREMELY heavy - part of the reason I was getting rid of it. However, she assured me she had transported heavier items and was not intending the ride the bike (phew!), and later she emailed me to let me know she'd got back safely.
So I hope she is now happily making patchwork quilts with the old Singer I've had since I was about 14.
