Sometimes nice things happen. I am to translate the next Alexander McCall Smith. I sort of knew I would be asked but it's not until you get the call that you really believe it.

An added bonus is that this will mean an extended visit to Embra to reconnoitre a bit as my memories are very hazy. O/H and I are planning a trip and it is so handy to have ML for practical information.

Students very sweet today, really trying to do the work assigned and they laugh at my jokes. Unfortunately there are also blank faces whenever they meet any cultural reference. I have decided that after the holidays (oh blessed blessed word) I will tackle religion and try to clear up a bit the matter of all the Protestant denominations in the English-speaking world. I will probably regret it eventually but it sounded good and they looked interested.

Tomorrow, I will need all my strength to go romping and running around with little granddaughter and probably snooze on the way back in the Tube.

Congratulations on the McCall Smith. You will know that the man is an academic lawyer at The University of Edinburgh. One of his books was a criminal law text for me last year. The lecturers up here grumble that a new edition is long overdue but he is too busy writing his crime novels. Here is a genuine exchange:

"McCall Smith? That's the chap that writes the detective stories isn't it?

Yes, but it's had to afford a walk in closet full of tartan trews on an academic lawyers salary"

These academics. So bitchy.

Wot larks Pip! You'll be able to be the excuse for a mini-meet of your very own - those Embra folks will get together at the drop of a hat, they are so hospitable.

When I was up there for a couple of days at the beginning of March I had a lovely time - stayed with Laura, so was able to see the garden before the tree-felling, and we met Max for lunch as well. Laura also very kindly took me for a drive out to the cottage which she house-sits and it was so beautiful with the snow on the surrounding hills.

I am very fond of Edinburgh and wish I could get there more often - but if you are planning an extended stay, well ... who knows?
